This region of the world is home to an amazing assortment of lichens- more than many other areas. You know -it’s the old story of Alice Algae and Freddie Fungus taking a lichen to each other! Current research indicates that there is a whole lot more going on there than meets the eye- a species of lichen may be much more like a community than a single species. A study of the lichens at Sugarloaf reveals that there are 134 species at Sugarloaf and far more than half of them are found out on the point at Sugarloaf.
