2 pm: Plants and the North Shore climate: Arctic relicts to red oaks

The North Shore of Lake Superior creates a unique climate zone within Minnesota. Interestingly, some plant species are restricted to this climate zone because it resembles the arctic habitat that once dominated the state as glaciers retreated after the last ice age. These arctic relicts are found in small, isolated populations, and survive well outside of the bulk of the species range. At the same time, some plants exist both on the shore of Lake Superior and more broadly across the state. I will discuss ongoing research in my lab designed to understand both types of species and their interaction with the unique climate on the North Shore.
