Have you ever had the opportunity to see a wild bird up close? Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center is participating in bird research by banding birds. This gives us a chance to figure out things like how to tell the difference between males and females, learn how long they live, and see if they migrate to places south and return to the same place to nest again. All of these are stories that the birds we band have the potential to tell.

Stop in any time between 7 am and noon and see what’s happening with the birds at Sugarloaf.

NEW for 2021

At 9 and 10:30 am we will be offering special programs about bird banding and the birds of Sugarloaf Cove. Drop by at those times to learn more and get your questions answered. FREE. (You may still visit the banding station any time).

Weather dependent, rain or excessive wind may cause the banding session to be cancelled. Call the Cove at 218-663-7679 to check. (Please note: staff may not be able to answer the phone immediately, as they may be out banding birds.)

Keystone Species of the North Woods

What is a keystone species? Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral? What does it do? What happens if that species population changes? We tend to think of health of a system from the bottom up, but keystone species prove that it is just as important to think from the top down! Let’s explore the mysteries of keystone species in the North Woods and figure out who’s really running the show!

All sorts of questions come up when you look at rocks. Join Margie on a casual walk at Sugarloaf Cove and discover how the North Shore came to be the beauty it is.

A Forest and its Trees

Trees are the undeniable rulers of the forest. We know they are busy producing oxygen that allows us to breathe- but there is so much more! Let’s spend some time exploring individual types of trees in the Sugarloaf Forest. We’ll use leaves, bark and shapes to learn who’s who in the tree world. What are trees providing for the forest system? Who can live in the trees? Are trees connected and can they communicate between each other? Let’s explore and find out! There’s a lot more going on with trees than meets the eye at first glance!
